Risk checklist

Price the condition you can prove—not the condition you hope for.

Condition uncertainty is one of the fastest ways to lose the margin in an auction purchase. Separate what the listing demonstrates from what it merely suggests, and attach a dollar reserve to every unresolved risk.

Step-by-step

A practical workflow you can use before the auction closes

01

Confirm product identity

Look for a readable model number, generation, size, capacity, color, and configuration. Small differences can change compatibility and resale value substantially. If identity is uncertain, use lower-value comparisons or skip the lot.

02

Inventory visible parts

Compare the photos with the manufacturer's included-parts list when available. Power supplies, remotes, mounting hardware, trays, batteries, and proprietary accessories may be costly enough to change the maximum bid.

03

Separate cosmetic and functional risk

Scratches and packaging damage are different from a motor, screen, battery, compressor, or control board that has not been demonstrated. Estimate repair cost and return exposure for the functions you cannot verify.

04

Document the pickup inspection

After pickup, photograph the package and item before extensive handling, verify identifiers, test promptly, and retain relevant records. Follow the auction's current process and deadlines if the item differs materially from its description.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask before committing money

What if the model number is not visible?

Use conservative comparisons, increase the risk allowance, and avoid assuming the highest-value variation. Product identity should be verified before relying on a precise resale estimate.

How much should I reserve for condition risk?

There is no universal percentage. Base the reserve on the product category, replacement-part cost, testing evidence, return exposure, and how much uncertainty remains.

When should I test a purchase?

Test and document it as soon as practical after pickup so you can make listing and any auction-support decisions within the applicable current timelines.
