Step-by-step

A practical workflow you can use before the auction closes

01

Research the exact item before bidding

Identify the model number and important variation rather than matching only the product family. Compare completed eBay sales with similar condition and included parts. Reject comparisons that differ in generation, capacity, size, or configuration.

02

Inspect and test after pickup

Photograph the package and item, record serial or model identifiers, inventory accessories, and test the functions a buyer will care about. Keep notes about defects and missing pieces so the listing does not overstate condition.

03

Build the listing from evidence

Use a specific title, item specifics that match the product, original photos, a condition statement, and a description of what is included. Price against the closest completed-sale evidence and choose shipping dimensions from the packed item, not the bare product.

04

Measure actual profit

Track acquisition cost, repairs, supplies, shipping, marketplace fees, refunds, and final proceeds in one record. Comparing actual profit with the original estimate makes future maximum bids more accurate.

Common questions

Questions buyers ask before committing money

Can I use the auction's product photos on eBay?

Original photos of the exact item give buyers stronger condition evidence and reduce ambiguity. Follow the marketplace's current image and intellectual-property rules.

Should I list an item before testing it?

Testing first produces a more accurate condition statement and reduces avoidable returns. If a function cannot be tested, disclose that limitation clearly.

What matters more: retail price or sold price?

Completed sales for the closest matching item and condition are generally more useful for resale planning than a retail reference or unsold asking price.
